- Single-focus: By trans people, for trans people. At the time when state oppression (both in
the UK but
also elsewhere) is tangibly materialising for us specifically, we should also stay focused on us
specifically. There is no other ideology attached to it.
-
Information collection: Trans people should stay informed about the likely developments for the
sake of
our own life planning and safety, but reading the news diligently takes a lot of effort and
doomscrolling r/transgenderUK takes quite a mental toll, so many people understandably tune out. And
both of those are good only at conveying what happened just now, not the big picture of what happened
and what is likely to happen. We're working on assembling a summary of how things are as well as a
likely timeline of further developments, using both our informal information
networks and own research,
so that we will not be taken by surprise again.
-
Local influence: if we can make a difference in and have influence over how organisations we're
part of
treat trans people, we should!
-
Leaving the country vs staying here: Many people are looking to leave the UK (us included), but
we also
believe we can do better than everyone leaving quietly on their own. Besides, many people are not in a
position to leave easily; we have a duty of care towards them.
-
Passing is good and helpful: It's like with money; more of it is good not just for you but for
the group
too! And yes people have different bases to work with in both cases; what you should be judged by is not
what you started with, but what you did with that. And as long as we interact with society that judges
people by appearance, passing better raises the standing of not just you, but also makes us be more
favourably perceived in your social circles when you are our representative (willingly or not). The two
most actionable aspects that help most directly aside from HRT itself are voice training and fashion
advice; we believe we should disseminate the resources for both of those better and set up local
accountability groups to help each other with that.
-
The medical system does not have our best interests at heart, and we are not obliged to submit to it.
-
Importance of mutual aid: When we eagerly help each other, both of us gain more than we put in.
The state and the society are putting us at a worse position than the cis baseline; this is how we can
counteract that. We should build trust by participating in social events with each other.
And regarding the word 'transsexualism': we do not have to subscribe to any particular orthodoxy regarding
transgender issues, except for one: the right to change one's sex.
